Showbiz Talent is Not About Acting Talent - Think You Have What it Takes to Make it As an Actor?

Joshua Karson

This may be surprising but true showbiz talent is so much more than your actual acting ability. To really make it in the entertainment industry, your acting talent is only part of the equation. Perhaps not the fairest of facts, but a fact none the less. You'll have nothing to worry about so long as you are aware of what elements are just as important.
So what else does it take to make it as an actor, you ask? An acting teacher of mine once put it this way; "Desire and Persistence are my two best friends." Notice that talent and skill are not even mentioned. Let's look further into what showbiz talent and skills you'll truly need to succeed in this wonderful world of entertainment.
Showbiz Talent Skill #1: Personality
There is an interesting myth about acting professionals and celebrities that they are all class clowns, extroverts and outgoing. Not completely true. If you've ever had a conversation with a working actor, you'll sometimes notice a shy, quite or awkward person standing across from you. Actors, surprisingly, can be reserved.
Nobody likes loud and obnoxious, however. Everybody likes an open, warm, inviting and friendly person who is genuine and honest. Develop those positive qualities and people will want to be around you. That, my friends, is goal 'numero uno' when developing your showbiz personality. Make sure people want to be around you. Become magnetic and your showbiz talent will begin to emerge.
Showbiz Talent Skill #2: Confidence
As you start to develop and hone your personality, you'll notice something extraordinary begin to happen. You will naturally feel your self-confidence rising. This is an important part of your showbiz talent. Before I go on, allow me please to be clear about one thing here. When I refer to confidence, I am not talking about arrogance.
Certainly arrogance may be sprinkled in to your overall persona for extra flare, but you must master self-confidence before even considering arrogance. It takes a certain type of actor to benefit from a bit of arrogance. OK, back to confidence. Get it, work on it, master it. Develop your showbiz personality first and your confidence should follow suit.
Still with me? Awesome! You've accessed your personality, added some flare to it, gained the right amount of self-confidence, and... uh, what next?
Showbiz Talent Skill #3: Organizational skills
What good is this golden persona of yours if the right people do not get to experience it. The right people are not your friends and family. (They hold a much different, yet equally important, role in your showbiz life -- more on this subject later.) The right people are the people who can help get you work with your shining showbiz talent!
These people include agents, managers and casting directors. They all play a pivotal role in getting a project to the stage or screen. You really want these important players to know who you are (by name ultimately!).
The actual 'how to' get these industry professionals to know you starts with your organizational skills. Before you start thinking, "Huh, I'm an actor. How important are these skills, really?" Extremely important. Why? Because no amount of talent or charm will get you anywhere if you are unreliable. Therefor it is essential to your showbiz talent that you get organized.
Don't forget, the biz in showbiz stands for business. You absolutely must run your career like a business. You are in the business of selling you.
There are many free online tools that can help you get and stay organized. You may need to find exactly which work for you but you'll need a system in place that includes a calendar, address book for contacts, notebook for, er, notes, to-do list, thoughts, ideas, directions... you get the point. Find the tools and the system that work for you to stay organized and you'll stay ahead of your competition.
Showbiz Talent Skill #4: Motivation
You have your personality developed, your self-confidence is soaring and you are organized. So far, so good. Remember what my acting teacher once said about desire and persistence? It is vital to your showbiz talent to stay motivated and excited by your career.
There will no doubt be hurdles and some defeat along the way, so make sure you have solid support from friends and family cheering you on. It's a long journey that can be highly rewarding. Find ways to rejuvenate yourself when needed and keep growing and you'll be well on your way to a long and successful career in showbiz.
Have all these elements in place? Great. Now it is time to shine and get in front of those agents, managers and casting directors to start building your showbiz talent.
To your showbiz success...
