Giving Credit Where Credit is Due the Right Way

Jane Sumerset Platinum Quality Author

Much of the stuff that will find its way in your writing will be borrowed information, especially when you're trying to build an argument to demonstrate a point. Whenever you employ other people's ideas, it's both good practice and academically honest to give credit where it is due. Not doing so isn't only disrespectful; it's plagiarism - a heavily frowned-upon activity.
When should you cite sources? Every time you include thoughts, ideas and quotes that aren't common knowledge, you have to give proper attribution to where it originated. In fact, you should consider this an important part of you work (duly checked with a good English proofreading software), rather than an activity that you work grudgingly on at the very last minute.
There are many ways to provide proper attribution, from integrating it within your sentences to adding footnotes to using a separate Works Cited page. The format you should be using depends on what guidelines you are following. In school, most professors will have their own preferences, so make sure you clear that up. For other forms of writing, the standards for attribution usually depends on either the kind of writing you're doing or the particular area of study it's a part of.
In newspapers and print, integrating sources within the body of the text is usually common practice. The actual formats will depend on the stylebook, such as AP or the Chicago Manual of Style that the publication follows.
With papers and reports for different areas of study, there's usually a prescribed guideline that's widely accepted among the peer group. Examples include Scientific Style and Format: The CBE Manual for Authors, Editors, and Publishers (for Biology), the Government Printing Office's Style Manual (for Government) and the AIP Style Manual (for Physics).
