Fashion in College

 Tom Tessin

st before we got into college we would look at all the older teenagers and yearn to be like them; so cool and all that.

That was when baggy clothes were the in thing. You had loose baggy shirts and loose baggy pants, which were a craze. Of course in school you couldn't be as fashionable as half the day you were in your school uniform and the rest of the time you spent studying.

But the day a kid passed out of school, and one of the first things on his or her agenda was to get a brand new wardrobe; something that would fetch a lot of attention, mainly from the opposite sex.

What was cool

I remember all the older guys in my college wore these jeans that they bought from ~Cartier", a shopping centre. They used to be this particular shade of blue that was not too dark, and very slightly ~neon-ish". The make was invariably something called Dacron.

Then there was this craze for Nike and Reebok shoes. If you had all of these you were, very, very eligible. Oh yes! I remember myself going all over town to find one place where these shoes were available cheap as my allowance wasn't too high. Not being able to find any such place I had to borrow some money from my elder sister and buy myself a very basic pair of Nikes.

Fashion in college

There'd be these gangs of girls and guys in college who would by their attire try and look like the various pop and movie stars of the day. The girls would ape mainly Madonna or Laura Branigan and the guys would try and look like Paul Young or Tom Cruise.

Imported brands

That was a time when a lot of foreign makes of clothes and fashion accessories were making their way into India either legally or otherwise. You had Pepe and Levi's jeans which were quite popular. Then you had Lacoste T-shirts and accessories.
